The Linger Longer Invitational

GREENSBORO, Ga. - Alabama's second-ranked men's golf continued to flex its muscle on Sunday in the final round of the Linger Longer Invitational, shooting 14-under 274 for a 54-hole total of 26-under-par 838 on the par-72, 7,073-yard Great Waters Course at Reynolds Plantation.
The Crimson Tide bested second-place Georgia (-12, 852) by 14 shots to capture their second straight Linger Longer Invitational title and their second straight tournament this year. The Tide has won its last two events by a combined 36 shots and three of the four events they have played this spring. The Crimson Tide has combined to shoot 73-under par in their last two events (six rounds).
Alabama sophomore Cory Whitsett turned in a remarkable round on Sunday, tying a school record of 8-under par he shared with Bud Cauley and Chip Deason. Whitsett entered the day at even par but stormed back to tie for first and defeat Georgia's Nick Reach in a playoff for his third career medalist honor.
The 8-under-par 64 was impressive from Whitsett but how he got there is the amazing part. After his 4-under par start on the first two holes, he made his only bogey of the round on the third hole and then sank birdies on the seventh and ninth holes to make the turn at 5-under-par 31.
Whitsett then reeled off six straight birdies before holing out on the par-4, 457-yard 16th hole to get to 7-under. He then made birdie on the par-5 18th to post his 64.
Junior Scott Strohmeyer came up with a big round for Alabama on Sunday with a 4-under-par 68 that tied his career best. He began the day in a tie for 33rd position, but finished at even-par 216 in a tie for 16th.
Freshman Justin Thomas also continued his strong play with a 2-under 70 in the final round for a 4-under total of 212, giving him a tie for sixth place. Senior Hunter Hamrick shot even-par 72 Sunday and finished tied for 14th at 1-under-par 215.
Bobby Wyatt was the Tide's drop score in round three at 4-over 76, finishing tied for 16th at even par. Sophomore Trey Mulllinax competed as an individual at the Linger Longer Invitational, also finishing 16th at even-par 216 after rounds of 68, 74 and 74.
